Natalia Ruiz Rodgers majored in Biology at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá campus (1993, work «Interacciones de herbivoría entre lepidótera y Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae) en Colombia»), and holds an M. Sc. in Biological Sciences, Plant Systematics, also at UNALco (1996, master's thesis «Sistemática del género Killipia (Melastomatacea: Miconieae) en Colombia») and a Ph. D. in Ecology at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (2001, Ph. D. thesis «Genotypic and phenotipic effects of herbivory in isolated populations of Pancratium sickenbergeri (Amaryllidaceae)»).
She is the Colombian Vice-minister of Higher Education since January 2017.
Professor Ruiz was the first Vice-Rector of Research at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, holding office from April 2005, shortly after its creation, until May 2006.
